A Calamity of Souls by David Baldacci is an exceptional novel set in the Deep South during the sixties. It features a complex narrative with a Black lawyer and a white lawyer who form an uneasy alliance to defend a Black man charged with a gruesome murder. The book is full of edification and emotional turmoil, but is an excellent read that will hold readers' attention and make them think about the causes of justice and equality.
